SO WHAT IS SNAKE OIL AND WHAT IS THE REAL DEAL

RED LIGHT THERAPY as an anti-ageing treatment is a fairly new kid on the block.
Discovered as a spin off from NASA experiments in plant propagation for the space shuttle program. The experiments showed that red light wavelengths would boost plant growth.  The scientist’s also noticed their skin lesions began to heal faster and their skin generally looked healthier. NASA then began studies of Light Therapy to increase the metabolism of human cells and stem the loss of bone and muscle of the astronauts.

Red Light Therapy has gained enormous popularity since then. It is prescribed for a variety of dermatological, and other ailments”

What we are interested in here is can it be effective as an effective anti ageing treatment?

Can it help us to “turn back the years”

SO IS IT THE REAL DEAL?     SIMPLE ANSWER IS YES.
Many scientific studies have now been carried out for Red Light Therapy as an anti-ageing, and wrinkle reducing treatment. We have read many of them. So you don’t have to. But we do encourage you to check on line too of course.

HOW DOES RED LIGHT THERAPY MAKE ME LOOK YOUNGER?
First lets answer that question with a question “Why do I look older?”. Well of course there are many reasons.
Part of the natural ageing process is the reduction in collagen levels, in fact after the age of 20 our collagen levels reduce at 1% per year. It is the collagen fibres that produce the skins elasticity.
At around the age of forty; collagen is no longer produced naturally. Both collagen and elastin are found in the dermis the thicker secondary layer of our skin. When they break and thicken the skin looses its elasticity. The result is unfortunately ageing lines, crow’s feet and wrinkles. The menopause will often leave women’s skin thinner, drier and less toned.

SO HOW WILL RED LIGHT THERAPY HELP ME LOOK YOUNGER?
The visible red light used for Red light therapy uses a wavelength range of 630-680nm. This is the optimum wavelength to penetrate through to the epidermis (outer skin) and be absorbed by the dermis layer below. Three important types of cells and tissues are in the dermis.  They are all connected to our anti ageing therapy.

  • Collagen
  • Elastin
  • Reticular fibers

The dermis also contains specialized cells and structures

The cells and tissue in the dermis layer of skin will convert light energy into ATP (adenosine triphosphates), which is the fuel for the cell. The fibroblast cells in the dermis layer have the job of producing collagen (which give the skin fullness or that plumped look) and elastin (which gives the skin it’s flexibility, it’s ability to spring back).

Red Light Therapy gives the cells the fuel, and the fibroblast cells start to produce collagen and elastin as if we were young again.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM ANTI-AGEING THERAPY.
Red light therapy is not an instant solution, however many people have seen some effects from the very first session. It will take several treatments normally over a few weeks to see full results. What you should expect to see during the course of treatment is

  • Smoother skin tone.
  • Reduction of large pores.
  • Reduction of age spots.
  • Reduction of wrinkles.
  • Reduction of crow’s feet.
  • Reduction of fore head and under eye wrinkles.
  • Repair of sun damage
  • Fading of scars and stretch marks
  • Return of a healthy glow

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS.
Red Light Therapy has FDA approval, and is widely recognised as being completely safe.
No contra-indications have been noted.
Of course eye protection should be worn during every facial session. If you are treating yourself at home be aware of others around you and make sure they don’t look directly into the light is you have purchased a panel version.
Pregnant women should take advice from their medical care provider.

WHERE TO FIND TREATMENT.
Self treat.
Many excellent Red light Therapy devices are available to use at home. They normally fall into two categories, panel or cordless hand held. The panel devices we have reviewed for you can all be folded away when not in use, so they are not an intrusive item in your beauty regime.

Each category of device is effective. In panel devices look for the greatest width of the three panels, to insure the largest overall treatment area. With the hand held devices you will be treating more specific areas,  but the treatment head size is still an important factor to look for. The larger the head the shorter the treatment time.

You actually have a great flexibility of choice.  Many devices also offer a broader light bandwidth setting than just red. Many come with three or more colour options. This will allow you to treat a wider range of conditions than just anti ageing which focuses just on the red spectrum. These extra light options may allow another member of your family to use the device for another treatment type. Domestic units will come with a comprehensive set of protocols and instructions.

Seek out a professional.
Being such a popular form of therapy many health spas, beauty salons and even gymnasiums are installing and offering some form of Red Light Therapy. Be prepared for the a long haul if you decide to go this route. As we mentioned above treatments need to be regular and often to ensure the best results.
